Sport

Yahl Primary School helps to facilitate opportunities for children to participate in a range of sporting activities throughout the year. These include:

  • Softball
  • Cricket
  • T-Ball
  • Athletics
  • Football
  • Netball
  • Minkey hockey
  • Hockey
  • Cross-country running; and
  • Soccer.

The school relies on parents to organise and coach sports teams.

Games and practices usually occur outside school hours.

If insufficient players are available from Yahl Primary School to fill teams, children are given the opportunity to join teams from other local schools. Similarly, children from other local schools may be invited to join Yahl Primary School hosted teams.

Choir

Children in Years 5, 6 and 7 at Yahl Primary School are given the opportunity to be part of a small school’s Choir and to perform with other regional schools at an annual event held at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.

Children also have the opportunity to travel to Adelaide to perform at the Festival Centre with schools from across South Australia.

Pedal Prix

The Yahl Primary School Pedal Prix team was formed in 2015 for children in Years 6 and 7, as a joint venture with Moorak Primary School.

Initially our team competed in a borrowed car, but the interest from children was so overwhelming that both schools purchased their own car and formed the W.A.S.P (We Are Still Pedalling) racing team in 2016.

The racing team competes in a variety of events conducted in Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge and Maryborough (Victoria).

Our Pedal Prix team is well-supported by parents and staff, and participation in this activity has proven to be an excellent vehicle for developing children’s self-esteem, social skills and a sense of belonging.

Yahl Primary School has just purchased a new Pedal Prix car which had its first trial at Murray Bridge in September 2018.

LEGO League

LEGO League is an international competition that aims to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, inspire innovation and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.

Up to 10 Yahl Primary School children in Years 6 and 7 form a team each year to compete in this competition. They are presented with a challenge and then must develop a solution to the problem by designing, building a robot using LEGO MINDSTORM. They then compete against other schools in the area on a table top playing field.

Cows Create Careers

Cows Create Careers is an initiative of Dairy Australia which aims to teach young people about careers in the Dairy Industry.

The Grade 6/7 class participates in this exciting program every two years. It involves students being involved in the rearing of two calves over a six week period.

The calves are supplied by local farmers, who also act as industry advocates. Students are rostered on to take of the calves and monitor their health and growth seven days a week for the six weeks.

During this time, students are also involved in a range of curriculum-based activities including:

  • Creating a scientific report to record the progress of the calves
  • attending an interactive dairy day
  • Choosing a topic and creating a 3-D Model Mootube Movie or Powerpoint to demonstrate their learning
  • Writing a letter/email to Dairy Australia to tell them about their new understandings of the dairy industry
  • Taking funny photos of the students with their calves; and
  • Participating in class discussions to share learnings and explore ideas.

From 2019, the Cows Create Careers project will be further embedded into the curriculum through the implementation of an innovative cross-curriculum program of learning around a similar theme.
